3 Pillars of a Successful Business Partnership

My first business venture was a partnership. Working with another person with similar dreams was the only way I was able to get started as a business owner. We coupled my general business skills and money, along with his expertise and time. We operated three units of a local pizza restaurant franchise throughout the 1990’s. I kept my day job, and my partner took care of the day-to-day operations of the business.

I’ve gone on to experience less rewarding partnerships, and fortunately, much more fruitful ones as well. I now understand more clearly why I prefer working in teams, and how I am typically more productive combining my skills and energy with my partners’. Starting with that first successful teaming, I have come to understand and appreciate that at the foundation of a strong business partnership are the three pillars of trust, respect and agreement.

1. Trust

Before there can be anything meaningful and lasting in a relationship, there must be a mutual level of trust. Trust, however, takes time to develop.

I have known David Begin, my current partner in various ventures, since 1991. We met when we both worked for a large software company, and have remained friends over the years. Our families have travelled together, and we have developed a close bond over time. When the opportunity first arose for us to partner on a business, we had already developed a deep trust at a personal level. This trust has been the basis of our business relationship. We rely on the fact, as good partners must, that we have each other’s interests in mind – we have each other’s backs in any situation. We try to consider what’s best for the other person, and what’s makes most sense for the business overall.

If you have the advantage of considering a partnership with someone with whom you have a long-term relationship, then trust should already be established. But what if you have recently met the person you are considering going into business with? How do you develop trust in a short period of time?

In my opinion and experience, it’s difficult if not impossible to rush the development of personal trust. There are, however, techniques we can use to accelerate the development of trust in a business environment. It requires careful and calculated observation, applied techniques, and lots of intuition.

In his book “The Trusted Advisor”, author David Maister explains that in business relationships you can quickly improve your “trust factor” by increasing credibility, reliability and intimacy while reducing self-orientation. The “trust factor” is a measure of trust, from the perspective of the other person with whom you are conducting business.

When it comes to measuring the evolving trust you have in a new partner, it’s applicable to consider those same factors. If the person is potentially trustworthy, they will likely demonstrate credibility (they tend to be accurate, complete, and don’t tend to exaggerate their knowledge), reliability (they follow through on their promises and are consistent in their actions and behavior), and intimacy (they are candid, genuine, and emotionally open). Low self-orientation (meaning that they are not always focused on themselves, they are good listeners, and don’t exhibit a need to always be right and win at all costs) is the other important clue to help you judge the character of your potential partners. It’s often most effective to watch for these indicators during the most casual of situations, like during a meal at a restaurant when the other person may reveal more of their true self.

Partnerships may not be a fit for people who do not like to seek advice from others, who do not prefer to share success or blame, and if they don’t see value in the opinions of others. As you are getting to know your potential partner, be sure to listen and observe carefully to identify these characteristics.

It’s also probably not a good idea to partner just for financial reasons. Overlooking a mismatch in personalities and vision in the short-term because that person has the money you need may eventually result in a negative relationship.

2. Respect

An effective business partnership also depends upon mutual respect. Ideally, your partners bring complimentary skills and abilities to the team. Combined with each partner’s perspective and experience, the group is considerably stronger and more effective than any one person could ever be by themselves. Team members must have a level of respect for each other, which fosters a positive and productive business environment.

Recognition and positive feedback are important for showing and feeling respect. We must take the time to recognize and appreciate the efforts and input that all partners bring to the collaboration. We all naturally want to be recognized and respected for our individual contributions, even if those contributions are never implemented. You demonstrate respect for your partner when you value or simply acknowledge their input, ideas and perspectives.

Of course, to gain respect, you must be worthy of being respected. Earning respect is in large part based on being a good person and partner (are you someone who looks for the best in others and who follows through on your promises and commitments to the team?) telling the truth and being transparent, and genuinely caring about your teammates. Respect the people you work with, and they should respect you in return.

3. Agreement

There can be complete trust and honest respect in a business relationship, but it can all come tumbling down with one seemingly simple misunderstanding. “I thought you were going to do this?” “No, I assumed that you would do that!”

During the honeymoon phase of the relationship, when we are caught up in the excitement of the new business, we may be quick to make assumptions and avoid difficult conversations. Dodging critical questions and assuming that things will always be great often leads to ruinous arguments later.

It’s critical that you clearly define upfront who will do what and how much time each partner will invest in the business. You also have to discuss and agree on many other points including the terms of a future buy-out – either because one of the partners wants out, or there is a death.

My business partner and I benefit from, and prefer, what we refer to as “active partnerships”. These are partnerships where all members are contributing fairly equally. It provides us the financial benefit of spreading the risk, but also sharing the burden and responsibility of building and growing our small businesses. It often makes sense to bring in investors, however, who are not involved in the day-to-day operations of the business.

Legal written partnership agreements are a must for any partnership. This typically includes an Operating Agreement and a Buy-Sell Agreement which is drafted by an attorney. The legal agreement defines all of the parameters and terms of the business, including who is the Managing Member, what capital is contributed by each member, and what happens when a member of the partnership wants to exit or can no longer perform their duties.

We recommend that you start with a Memo of Understanding. This is simply an outline that documents most of the terms of the partnership. Then you consult with an attorney to finalize the details and create the legal Operating Agreement. The key is to discuss and agree upfront on the terms of the partnership, and avoid the misunderstandings and resentment that can otherwise develop later.

There are many reasons why partnering may make best sense for your business venture, including funding (one partner or a “silent partner” provides the money for start-up), expertise (one partner has the expertise in the industry or business you are starting), and the desire to build a company with friends and family (although we always caution that you be careful when partnering with your friends and family as it may end badly). If you are like me, you may simply prefer, and be significantly more productive, when you combine your efforts with a partner. Regardless of the reasons, always consider the three pillars of trust, respect and agreement upon which successful business partnerships are usually based.

Business Success – Getting Back To The Basics

In business it’s easy to become demotivated by making your business too complex. To succeed it’s important you find a way to keep the overview, get back to basics and understand exactly what the important elements are in your business that you want to be focusing on.

Get Access To Outside Information

You’ve got to keep yourself motivated by listening to outside information. This is a must. It helps you to broaden your perspective and puts what you are doing into a wider context.

If it’s about building your business, learn from those who are successful, and who have built successful businesses. Decide what success means for you, and focus on that whilst taking on board what others say. Investing a small amount of money in order to get the information needed that’s going to widen your view will pay you in the long run.

Want To Do Something Different

You also need to want to do something different from what you’re currently doing. If you are in business, and you want to expand your income by doing the same as what you’re currently doing, chances are that income is going to stay the same.

Unless you have a strong desire to move beyond what’s comfortable and familiar to you, things probably won’t change much on the income and profit front.

You have to make business a priority in your life. That means that you have to study it, get to understand it inside out, and keep going until creating a thriving business becomes second nature to you. This may well involve you, again, doing things that you wouldn’t normally do:

  1. Listening to audios on business development or watching videos
  2. Going to training seminars
  3. Getting some coaching, mentoring or business advice
  4. Learning new material
  5. Trialing and testing things that may or may not work out

It is all part of the business journey, and you have to be OK with all of this.

Be Prepared To Take Calculated Risks

In order to be successful in business, you have to be willing to take risks. Your business will get to a stage where either you need to invest more into it to get the resources you need to expand. This could be:

· Time

· Money

· Effort

· Energy

Not wanting to make those investments may mean you are stifling the development of your business.

You may well find that you are faced with cashflow issues for instance, where there’s no physical money available in the business to pay the bills that are coming in. You may need to make a decision in that moment that you need a quick loan. But the risks you take need to be calculated.

Are you guaranteed the level of income you need in the next six months, year or five years to cover the loan repayments? If not, is it wise to take out the loan? If you can’t see any funds coming in on the horizon to cover the bills that are facing you, you have to take a cold hard look at your entity and ask yourself whether you have a business or a hobby.

Ask Your People

You have to go out and physically ask people to buy what you have to sell. You have to ask people whether they even want what you’re selling. If they don’t, and you’re passionate about the thing you’re trying to sell, you have to sell to them exactly what they’re going to get out of investing in your product or service.

If they are still not interested, maybe what you have is, again, an expensive hobby. You need to make that decision. Maybe you need to keep the hobby and find something else you’re passionate about to sell.

If you have nothing else right now, partner with someone who has. If what you have to sell is not quite what people want then tweak what you have (asking people as you go along) until it matches what they want.

So, start putting your attention and intention on the difference your business can bring to your consumers, clients and the world in general. Start falling in love with that and what you will notice is that you’ll start attracting resources and support to come and aid you in that.

This kind of attraction is what you need to help produce your big idea but it never happens when we spend our attention and intention focused on our personal objectives alone.

2. Get a mentor

You really want to get yourself a mentor or two. Individuals who resonate with you, that you respect and admire and people who can show you how to navigate many of the obstacles that this adventure will present.

Without at least one mentor whom you know has gone through that challenging path and has created the kind of success you would like, it’s going to be really tough for you to keep going when the going gets tough.

One of the best things about getting a mentor is the fact that many of the excuses and problems that might keep you stuck will just not impress him/her. So whether it’s a money issue, fear or whatever kind of obstacle you might be feeling overwhelmed by, you mentor is the one that helps you gain right perspective and helps you to move past the obstacles because almost always, if you keep moving forward those obstacles disappear.

I recommend you make an effort to get at least one mentor who’s overcome things, who pushed through and went for what they wanted even when everyone else said they couldn’t do it.

You want that person/s to stand with you and to be willing to help you navigate that distance between where you want to be and where you currently stand.

3. Surround yourself with the right people

In my private community I refer to this as the mind & money green house. You want to check yourself into a nice little green house where people can support you and everyone carries the right energy.

This can be a local entrepreneurs community, an online community for entrepreneurs or private masterminds that are specifically targeted for like-minded individuals who know how to nurture and incubate their desires and goals. In other words, start hanging out with winners!

It’s easy to find people who are complaining and drowning in negativity. It’s also easy to find forums, social groups and so on, that might be entertaining but never really help move you forward.

I like hanging out with people like me who are daring, those who aren’t afraid to dream big and risk big. Those who had nothing except great passion and the courage to start up ideas that the world considered impossible.

I love hanging out with people who aren’t afraid to stretch their thinking and challenge impossibility and what I know is that when you place yourself in such an environment, your life and business can’t help but expand.

4. Educate yourself

This may not seem like something crucial to mention when talking about tips for growing a successful business, but I can assure you that your business success will be in direct proportion to the degree of education you give yourself. Now, this isn’t about formal education as that has nothing to do with educating yourself.

I am talking about the kind of education that will grow you mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I am talking about the education that will help you transform and come into better alignment with your own nature.

You want to grow yourself mentally and spiritually if your desire is to enjoy prosperous living and self-education is the best way of attaining that result.

We live in a universe where material manifestations have intoxicated us so much even though we now know that they are all just effects. Your business will never outgrow your mind and the state of your consciousness.

So if you want a more thriving business, you must learn how to shift your mind and your state of consciousness.

Although all the abundance and prosperity is infinitely supplied to us here on earth, we have to individually claim our inheritance consciously before it can flow into our reality. There is an art to transformation and connecting with this infinite supply. You can learn how to make this your new lifestyle, but it requires some unlearning of the old patterns of thought and retraining of your mind.

5. Start where you are now and use what you have

Our universe rewards action and if you want to start generating some new momentum, you need to start moving some new energy in your life. Being stagnant is the best way to self-destruct your business and breed fear and failure.

You must learn how to use the little that you have no matter how insignificant it may seem to you.

Use it freely, to the best of your abilities and you’ll see that ideas will start coming to you. Money, resources, new people and new opportunities will start flowing into your experience.

So learn to use the little you have because I know there must be something you can do right where you are; there’s got to be something you have right now…

Use it wisely, make sure it falls into alignment with your vision because when you do what you can with what you have, it puts you in a state of harmony and alignment with the universal laws that govern success.

That’s where luck, magic and coincidences come from! But they will only come through if you start putting yourself in that state of harmony now.
